Why did you let your parents choose your religion?

Your parents might do a good job choosing your spouse for you, but religion is a matter concerning your life for eternity. Shouldn't you be more careful?

People often emulate their parents, whether it be religious beliefs, political beliefs, social values, or even favorite sports team.

Maybe I was a strange kid, but I wanted to please my parents. I accepted the religion that they told me was true and right, primarily because alternatives were never a matter of discussion, and I assumed that they knew what they were talking about. Upon hitting adolescence, I began doing my own research into matters of spirituality (and nearly everything else). I am no longer an adherent of the religion that my parents followed. I let them select and influence my beliefs because they were a lot bigger than me, and what they said was law. But as an adult? No. I'm still religious, but on my own terms (although I do not wish to disrespect their religion, and can still see positive aspects of it). As for letting my parents pick my spouse, no way.

I never let my parents choose my religion. Even though I was raised as a Roman Catholic, I didn't start believing and following my Roman Catholic Faith 'til I was 19 or 20. I actually spent a part of my adolescence researching different religions---thank God I was given the grace to realize that I was in the true Faith the whole time.

At a young age your parents have complete control (almost) over your religious views because you cant make those decisions on your own. But usually when you get to 13 or 14 you decide for your own. That's just my opinion though

They didn't, nor did they choose my spouse. It is archaic practice which no longer works unless you live in a backwards society which tends to treat women like servants or chattel, and men as their little cherubs who do no wrong even when they do go bad.

Because society places ultimate importance, when teaching children, to this "virtue of obedience." It's important evolutionarily, in order to keep children "safe," however the world is so attached to it, it's really hurting us a lot more than it helps.

It takes some of us dozens of years to get over this toxic training.

Because when you're a child, you believe that what you're being taught is absolute and the only way to go. Luckily when I grew up, I was able to think for myself and chose the religion I felt was right for me.

    Everyone chooses their own religion.

Unless you've never heard of someone leaving or converting to one. Both happen all the time, and both imply you are doing something that was not how you were raised.

I wass like 3 yearss old ... what was I supposed to do? Just tell them Im not going to church? Who is going to babysit me? Are my parents supposed to just lay down and take that kind of lip from a toddler?

I didn't. I was raised pantheist, but became an atheist about 7-8 years ago.
