Montreal and Quebec City both cater quite a bit to tourists, so you will certainly find plenty of hotels in both cities. How much you will pay for those hotels really depends on where in the city you are willing to stay.

Quebec City is mostly in two areas: The historic old part of town, and the more modern shopping/restaurant/hotel area. Quebec is much more of a place to go to feel the old charm of Europe without the long 7hr plane ride.

In Quebec City, I'd try out the funicular, go see Montmorency Falls, and eat at a restaurant that serves you in period costumes. Visit the fort and see the cannons and such on the Plains of Abraham.

For Montreal, I am much more familiar.

If you want to be downtown or in the touristy Old Port area, expect to pay more for the convenience of being close to the attractions.

Your best bet is to check on Expedia.ca or another travel website to get an idea of prices, and pick one that meets your needs. You may want to avoid hotels located on Sherbrooke Street West for August, as they have road construction going on in that area and the traffic problems and heavy machinery will make a lot of noise and may disrupt your stay. And the Marriott on Lincoln Street has a labor dispute and so service may not be up to speed with other places.

For attractions, I would definitely check out the Old Port of Montreal, the Olympic Stadium Park area where you can find the Biodome, Botanical Gardens, and Insectarium. Maybe take a ride up the Olympic Stadium funicular to see a bird's eye view of Montreal. You can go to La Ronde Six Flags with the kids for some fun at the amusement park.

For events and festivals in the city, try maybe the Indiana Jones Museum Adventure, and the Lion King Broadway show starts August 9th until September.

    For sports enthusiasts:

Rogers Cup tennis will have the world's best tennis players in Montreal during the August 9-14th.

On August 10th, you can buy tickets at the gate for the Montreal Impact soccer game with Tampa Bay.

On August 11th, the Montreal Alouettes football team (CFL rules) will be hosting the Edmonton Eskimos at Molson Stadium.

Probably the most recognized hockey team in the world, the Montreal Canadiens, will not start their season until September. But you can pass by the Molson Centre to check it out.

As for restaurants, Montreal and Quebec both have some fabulous places. Please don't be afraid to try a few different places. Avoid the chains like Subways or McDonalds, and go for smaller restaurants and cafes that look kid-friendly. Most have their menus outside so you can check the prices, and there is usually a cheaper lunch menu (12pm-2pm) and the higher-priced dinner menu (afetr 5pm).

If you want to try a few, here are my favourites:

    - Guido & Angelina (Pizza/Pasta)

    - Magnan (Traditional Quebec food)

    - Schwartz's (deli, smoked meat)

    - Chalet BBQ (chicken, and only chicken!)

    - Restaurant du Vieux Port (steak/seafood)

    - Devi (Indian)

I am surprised that you are allowed out without your carer. Have you heard of guidebooks. libraries and Google?
