Why do people say Italians are racist?

Yes, like ANY group, SOME are. But MANY are very much against racism!!

In fact, I credit my anti-racist attitude, largely to my Italian grandmother. Whenever someone said something racist, she always interjected and said something like "You know, you can't help the color of your skin". And for a woman from another time, that's pretty modern! It's mostly because she experienced a great deal of prejudice growing up, having dark skin/hair/eyes, herself (she even wrote a letter about her experiences after she died).

Why must people stereotype?? Also, isn't there a lot of hypocrisy in someone CLAIMING to be anti-racist, stereotyping an entire group AS racist?

Update:

*which we DISCOVERED after she died, I mean.

Update 2:

Who has an inferiority complex?

Update 3:

Gee, I'd LOVE to see the statistics behind THAT statement, Mimi.

And Italians don't hate Arabs. There's just an immigration problem going on right, now. ALL countries have a bit of xenophobia.

Update 4:

Attilio and Il Capo,

EXACTLY. I was taught to judge character, not skin color. As, I think, MANY Italian-Americans are.

I think most of us are actually pretty colorblind..

Update 5:

Update 6:

@Cough Cough,

Did you not read the question?? I said, YES, there are SOME Italians who are racist in the FIRST sentence! Pay attention, dear!

@Il Capo,

I took a break for like a month, actually. I just started answering again a couple days ago.

Update 7:

@Mimi,

You can find instances of racism and xenophobia in EVERY country. Those links prove nothing.

    Racism exists in all European countries,not just Italy.Most Europeans are very well educated & well traveled and are non racist,but there exists a minority population of racists in each European country.I'm Italian American and I am not a racist since I was raised to have RESPECT & LOVE for all races of human kind.My Italian immigrant parents were positive role models to me since I grew up witnessing them treat & Judge: Black Americans,Asian Americans,American Indians,Mixed race Americans by their character and NOT by their race.

    I'm not Italian, but I agree with everything you said there. I've heard so many call Italians racist, yet I have yet to meet a racist one.

    It's so adorable how family oriented they are.

    EDIT: Pay no mind to Mimi -.- Trust me... And most (If not all countries) are having problems with immigration.

    Because those people are ignorant. They just want to get attention by trying to start up a fight or argument. Anyone with a brain knows that every country has it: racists and non-racists, fat and skinny, ugly and beautiful, smart and not so smart, nice and mean people. Just ignore the dumb comments because they arn't worth getting angry over.

    I know right?? Most of us don't care or think about things like race.. I separate people like this..people that I don't like and people I do like or have things in common with.. I think because we aren't punks.. ya know? Some of us will stand up to any race and say any thing with out thinking. So that's some of it.. I wasn't raised racist..most of us speak our minds though..

    @W i had to lay off this section though.. this place has lots of negative going on..

    I love these people talking sh*t on this question and they aren't Italian! ya know??

    I think they call them racist because they don't integrate with other people sexually and others feel like they think they are better then they are so in defense they call them racist.
