Why does my desktop not recognise the SD card?

The computer has an SD card slot into which I put the SD card, I then click on computer and then removable disk I. The little blue thing swirls around for ever and a day and then a window pops up saying

Location is not available

I:\ is not accessible.

The request could not be performed because of an I/O error.

How do I solve this?

Update:

It's a Sandisk sdhc micro disk in a Sandisk adapter, have got it to work once before but it doesn't anymore, I've also tried a TDK SDHC card

Update 2:

The computer is approx 7 yes old although I don't use it often and have never used an SD card in it before

Is the card a high capacity SDHC card? If so, it could be the on-board card reader doesn't recognise it. Try using one of these http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?m...

An I/O error referres to an interruption or corruption between you and another device or computer.

In your case, many things could be causing this problem.

When you're diagnosing a computer issue, you must seperate the problem into two groups: Physical and Virtual.

From a physical perspective, a pin on the SD reader or the SD itself (More likely the card) is broken, to say the least. Your computer needs a full, connected circuit. If this is a relatively new computer, it is probably the card. If it's old and you've used the slot a lot, then it's more likely the card reader.

From a virtual perspecitve, it can be the drivers installed on your machine. Did you update your computer recently? Sometimes windows updates can download bad drivers that were never fully debugged to your computer.

For this issue, try to find out if this issue is common with your PC.

    Good luck,

    Matt.
