As a woman safety should be your priority (men too). Make sure you have a new lock on your door. See if you can do a (downlow) background check on other renters in the apartment. Do NOT trust anyone else in the apartment to hand in your part of the rent to the landlord. ALWAYS do that yourself and keep a signed receipt!
You can always keep a fridgerator in your room if you do not trust your roomates. Find out what the ground rules are when bringing home a lover. Sometimes the rule is just go to a hotel. No one wants to hear that. LOL. Find out if you can have your own landline in your room, if you don't have a cell. I heard Vonage is good for people who are on a tight budget.

Make sure you have insurance on YOUR property, if a fire happens the only thing that will get replaced is the apartment, not your personal belongings. See if the landlord has any rights to be in the apartment at anytime! See if there is s sub-lease clause, so if you need to leave, you can rent it out until your lease is up.
