The good news is the table still might be worth $900 or so. The bad news is I don't know any way to fix it before your dad gets home. I have recently been studying bamboo veneers, and such a thing might actually increase the value of the table, but you might need expert help to put it on. If the table is solid wood, you might be able to strip and sand a thin layer off the top, then re-stain / re-varnish until it is maybe better than before the nail polish spill, but again it would take time and work. You might spin it as a chance for one or both of you to learn a useful skill.
You might be able to put a table-cloth on it, and a nice candlelight dinner on top of the tablecloth. He might get suspicious, but might not figure out the damage for a while, and the dinner might soften him up.

Dear student,
Accidents happen and it is clear that you tried to protect the table by using a plate. You would need to go to Home Depot to get the proper supplies. The best thing is to always tell the truth. Trying to hide a wrong or an accident never turns out well. It is always best to face your fears and you will find that the results are usually not as bad as you imagine. Honesty is always the best policy. Tell us what happens.
