This site will list the Housing Authority's for the area's that you are looking to locate to. Start with your zip code and then move on to your state. Each Housing Authority is different and they all accept applications at different times so just because the one closest to you may not be accepting applications does not mean the next one over is not. I am sorry to say though, that most Housing Authority's when accepting applications have an average estimated wait of 6 months to 7 years. But many Housing Authority's now have an initial lottery that issues a certain amount of vouchers right away and the remaining applicants are placed on a waiting list so if you're lucky you could be assisted right away.

Contrary to what many have posted you are allowed to apply with Housing Authority's that are in an area where you do not live but these Housing Authority's will most likely give a preference to residents of their jurisdiction which would cause you to move slower on their list. They would also require that you move to their jurisdiction for the first year that you are assisted under the Section 8 program. After the first year you would be able to use the Portability option of your voucher and move anywhere in the United States that has a Housing Authority covering the area.

My advice to you is to call each Housing Authority you can and apply at all of them that are taking applications, yes you can apply with more than one. Just remember to keep your contact information updated with them at all times because you don't want to miss your letter when they try to contact you. Also you may want to ask if they have a Public Housing program, you don't get the freedom to find your own place but they usually accept applications more often and the waiting list is not as long.

Finding open housing authority waiting lists isn't going to help you whatsoever. In order to apply, you need to LIVE in the area in which you apply, and there is usually a one year residency requirement before you can apply. You can only look around for such an open list, move there, wait a year, and then hope that the list is still open when you qualify to apply.

You can only apply in the county you live in but if that HA is closed to new Sec 8 applications you can try any other county in Illinois but you cannot apply out of state without being a resident there. I suggest you call or go online to see which county HAs are still open to apply to. Remember that if you get a voucher from another county you must live there for 12 months after you get the voucher if you dont live there already. Most vouchers take at least 5 years to get.

This store pays a bit above minimum wage. So I'm guessing you are making $19,000 a year. Does not sound like you will qualify. Find a way to cut costs. Maybe try for food stamps if you need government assistance. You have a little one, you don't really want to live in those income based places.

It does not work like that.

There are only 2 lists you can sign up for. The county you live in and the county you work in. You can't randomly apply.
