Are you required to have proof of insurance in a brand new car?

I juss bought a new car, and the cop pulled me over because he thought my tabs were expired and he asked for my insurance but i told him that i have insurance i just haven't listed this car yet because it's brand new, so he wrote me a ticket..is that legal?

It's legal for him to give you a ticket for no insurance card, but if you told him it was a new car, it was a kind of petty of him to do it.

On most auto insurance policies I have seen, you have 30 days of "automatic" coverage from the day you purchase a car (new or used) until you have to tell you insurance company. Call your company, tell them you bought the car and give them the date of purchase. They can send you a card that pre-dates your ticket. Call the court listed on the ticket and ask them if you can mail in a copy of your card to prove you had insurance. You should be good to go.

in every state you are required to have insurance for your respective vehicle, insurance coverage will vary by vehicles age, for example if you have a 1987 honda civic you may oftentimes only need liability insurance, but i'm almost sure that whenever you purchase a new vehicle, full coverage insurance is required(at least initially), so i hate to tell you, but the officer was correct in issuing you a ticket, one more thing, i'd check the law in your state, so you know what you're dealing with, good luck in your research. gerald
