How do I extend the life of my laptop battery?

I've made the mistake of using my laptop when it's plugged in to keep the battery full. I might be ok since my laptop might have a system that uses AC power when the battery is full. I now take the battery out and plug in the laptop to use it. I was wondering, is it better to leaves the battery charged or uncharged when it's not in the computer for a while?

that's not a problem, but heat *IS*. use a really good laptop cooler. my mother's compaq lasted 6 years before the whole laptop gave out. desktops last longer, but you should upgrade the hard drive at 5 years.

You may have noticed that you laptop still works without the battery in. This means that when the battery is fully charged it's not charging at all it's like the battery was out. That being said I'm not a computer guy and so I don't really know if the battery naturally get's drained over a ceirtan period of time in which case over a long time your battery would wear out. I'd ask someone at best buy or something if I were you.

Around 40% charged and keep it cool somewhere will extend the life
