Where's the best place to stay in St. Thomas?

My mom and I are going to St. Thomas in February for ten days. We'd love a moderately priced hotel on the beach with a fridge in our room. I'd love the hotel bar to be open late and the place to be semi smoker friendly. Should we rent a car? She'd love to sight see a bit, as where I'd love to lay out and swim and smoke and drink and socialize. Should we stay in the east or central part of the island? Any other words of advice?

Yes, rent a car so you can travel around the island. Lots to see. Not sure though which hotels allow smokers. We stayed in a Condo and loved it. West end is not a tourist area, mainly the airport. Hotels are around the south, east and north sides. Most are on the east end though. Really great snorkeling.

Read the other comments, and apparently they have never been. We visited several years ago, stayed 7 days and plan to go back soon.

It's just St. Thomas.. it's not like you were going to a REAL Caribbean island because you need a Passport to do that.. so... Just about any place you stay will satisfy your demands

If going out and socializing is important to you, you would probably enjoy Red Hook more than downtown Charllete Amalie. I hear it has more restaurants, bars, nightlife, etc.
