how to stop google searching every time i type a letter?

I want my google search to go back to the regular search can anyone help? its driving me crazy

I DONE WHAT YOU SAID, THANKS FOR THE ADVICE,HOWEVER IT SAYS IT WONT SAVE MY PREFERENCES IF I HAVE DISABLED COOKIES IN MY BROWSER. HOW DO I SORT THAT???

    When you are at www.google.com, do you see a setting icon in the top right?

    Find the word Google Instant inside, its somewhere in the middle, and then turn it off

    Then, problem solved

    Click on the wheel on the top right hand corner for "search settings." Go down and check "Do not use google instant"
