oxious fumes, obnoxious drivers and workplace tedium makes the job of a tollbooth worker an endurance test. Nevertheless, the average salary of tollbooth workers is $45,000 according to BusinessWeek. Tollbooth workers can make much less or far more money, depending on their employer, hours worked and special payouts.
Working Conditions
Tollbooth operators work in a confined area, described by BusinessWeek as a two-and-a-half-foot-wide booth, in shifts lasting as long as eight hours. Booths may be exposed to the elements with intense heat, biting cold and precipitation encountered. Tollbooth workers are usually unionized employees earning good pay with excellent benefits. Overtime hours can increase pay significantly.
George Washington Bridge
Operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the George Washington Bridge, connecting Fort Lee, New Jersey, to New York City handles as many as 300,000 crossings per day on weekdays. This bridge has tollbooths on the New Jersey side with 75 full-time tollbooth workers and 31 booths. Most people use EZ-Pass, an automated payment processing system, with 30 percent paying in cash. Bridge tollbooth operators handle about 400 cars per shift and earn $45,000 annually plus benefits.
New Jersey Turnpike
The New Jersey Turnpike employs 700 tollbooth workers who recently avoided losing their jobs as the state of New Jersey considered privatizing this thoroughfare. Turnpike toll workers are unionized and average $65,000 per year plus benefits. The turnpike may eventually be privatized, but to keep their jobs workers have agreed to take a pay cut that will average $15,000 per worker. Some workers earn far greater than the average with one employee reported to have earned $321,985, including payouts and bonuses.
Bay Area Toll Authority
In California, the Bay Area Toll Authority manages the seven San Francisco Bay Area toll bridges that are state owned. These bridges do not include the Golden Gate Bridge, which falls under separate jurisdiction. The salary for a toll collector is $2,705 to $3,285 per month or $32,460 to $39,420 per year. Benefits include health and dental insurance; a retirement plan; paid holidays, sick days and vacation time; and educational reimbursement.
Ohio Turnpike Authority
The Ohio Turnpike is the primary toll road in the Buckeye state and employs toll collectors who earn an average of $53,954 per year, according to the Hillsboro Times-Gazette. That figure is for full-time workers; the authority also employs part-time toll collectors.
