I would HIGHLY recommend the AudioEngine A2s. I own a pair myself... hence the profile picture. Anyways, if you can raise your budget, the A2s are simply awesome.
Out of the ones you listed, the AV40s will most likely sound the best, however I agree that they do get somewhat sketchy reviews. I got the A2s because the AV40s had so many negative reviews, but who knows, maybe they have no foundation. I'm sure there's nothing wrong with the AV40s, it's just that the reviews are somewhat worrisome.
Altec Lansing makes pretty decent speakers, but I would recommend the Klipsch Promedias over them any day. I like the Klipsch's myself as well, so I would probably get them.
Good luck
PS: Raise your budget to $200 and get the Audioengines... you will not be disappointed. =D

Altec Lansing is a very good speaker system for your computer. I have used Altec Lansing for well over 10 years on my home computer. Another brand to look at is Klipsch. Demo them at your local retail store and let your own ears be the judge. Hope this will help you out.

The monstrous subwoofer for Altec Lansing's Expressionist Ultra MX6021 2.1 PC speaker set looks like it is capable of rattling the pictures off your walls—and your neighbor's. Obviously, power isn't everything when it comes to subwoofers, but this particular sub can get extremely loud without distorting. Unfortunately, the woofers on the left and right speakers can't keep up with the sub. At high volumes, they buzz, and not just on songs with deep bass. At $199.95 (direct), you should be able to expect completely distortion-free sound. Add a not-terribly-user-friendly remote control to the equation and you have an expensive, but mediocre speaker system.
