There is no one particular brand that is better or "best". The "best" bike for you - well...you have to take several out for extensive test rides & figure out which one just "feels" right & rides the best to you. Brands? Tons of 'em. Raleigh, Masi, Specialized, Cervelo, Trek, Giant, Cannondale, etc. The list goes on & on... All found at real bicycle shops. Tell the salesperson exactly what you need the bike to do for you. This time of year - start looking for close-out & over-stock sales as the 2012 models are coming out. A 2011 or 2010 model may be lower priced & just as good.

What do your friends ride? I am not suggesting that you get the same bike, but the same brand different bike may be a fit for you and with your riding buddies. I would think that is the closest fit to answering your question. I like Globe, Wabi, Specialized and Trek to name a few. Your budget is a great price point, giving you many options. I would figure you need a fast bike.
