Programs similar to Open Office?

I had taken an online writing class that provided a link for me to download the Open Office program, and I downloaded it onto my desktop computer. But now I want to download the same program onto my laptop; unfortunately, I cannot find the same program. The ones that I am finding now say I have to sign in to a website and offer other programs to download, but I don't want any of that. Are there any other safe programs similar to Open Office that I could download? Many thanks to all in advance.

Open Office has been taken over by a commercial interest, and what was Open Office is now being developed as Libre Office.  Libre Office functions exactly the same as Open Office, and uses the same file types, and handles MS Office files the same.  Download it from http://www.libreoffice.org/download/

    Chris G is correct

I haved used both and they look almost exactly the same (Libre and Open office)

If your having to sign on to a site to that is offering other programs you have to buy, instead of Open office ... I would say that you MAY be infected . ( "may" being the key)

Just to be sure I would scan with MalwareBytes ( http://www.malwarebytes.org/ ) And Super AntiSpyware ( http://www.superantispyware.com/ ) ... which is a good idea anyway.....

I will be honest that I have not directly downloaded Open office from the site lately but you could also try a software portal such as MajorGeeks.com, Softpedia.com, or Download.com to get Open office ... esp if you have those sites re-direct you to the same page telling you to buy something ... THATS an infection, if you ask me, and the prior mentioned software should take care of it for you no problem.

    --------------------

Open Office - ( http://www.openoffice.org/ ) This is the most well known alternative and is Open Source and despite what some say, IT CAN read and write ALL MS office formats. It started out as "Star Office" I believe years ago and after "Sun Microsystems" had issues with Microsoft, the open source (I think) Star Office was developed into Open Office.

Libre Office - ( http://www.libreoffice.org/ ) This is one I read about in PCWorld Magazine and I felt I had to try. I am not 100% sure on how it was made but it has to do with Oracle "partnering" or something to that effect with Open Office and some programmers didn't like that so they (like what happened with Star office in a way) ... branched out with Libre Office.

I agree with the other posters, go with LibreOffice.

A company called Sun Microsystems released the source code for Star Office. They called it Open Office. Open office is also open source, so anyone that wants to can change the program to fit their needs and release it if the like, but they must call it something different.

The developers of open office where afraid of what Oracle was going to do with open office, so they decided to fork it and call it Libre Office.

I will follow the developers and use Libre office.
