How to change to a external monitor with a laptop that's screen is broken?
I dropped my laptop off the bed on to hardwood floor and the screen is gone, can't see anything but the laptop still comes on and I'd like to see if there is no internal damage before I buy another screen but I can't see to get the F8+FN to switch monitors so any idea how to do this and also I have a HP Pavilion D6 Screen.

Most likely the drop damaged the hard drive and not the screen.
Connect the laptop to a external monitor using a VGA cable the hold down the Fn key and press the F5 key or the F8 key depending on the brand of the laptop.

connect a computer screen, keyboard and mouse to it, then press the ability button and rapidly close the lid. it is going to boot up in "clamshell" mode and paintings like a classic cmputer, in the process the computer screen.
