Social Security for Widows?

My husband collected social security at age 62. He died 4 years ago. I am looking to retire when I am 66, which is full retirement for me. I wanted to know if I would be able to get my husband's full retirement benefit, or if it would be what he got at age 62.

You can choose to get the widow's benefit when you turn 60 or 62 (not sure which), then when you reach your own full retirement age of 66 you can switch to your own social security if it is higher. Your widow's benefit would be what he was receiving when he took his partial benefit at 62.

You get what he collected at age 62. There will be NO increase to full benefit.

The SS office can tell you what you need to know, or ask that question on their website (don't use your SS number, just ask the question there). All I can tell you is that they do take into consideration if you've been married.

You need to make an appointment with SSA and ask them.
