How should the NHL solve regulation ties?

Personally, I'm sick of the shootout. I would love to see a 10 minute 4-on-4 session to allow the overtime period to actually get going. 5 minutes just seems like such a short time. If it's still tied after 10 minutes, end the game. Stop awarding the "loser point" and stop handing out 1 point for just getting to overtime. Wins should be 2 points, and nothing else should count. Create a reason for teams to actually battle for the win in overtime. What with how crowded the playoff picture is, I'm willing to bet that every team in a overtime would do anything to win and get the two points.

What is wrong with ties? Why does every game have to end with a winner? Playoffs and finals I can see a game to the end we need to have a winner to resolve the playoff. But a regular season game ending in a tie isn't the end of the world in fact it makes more sense than three point games.

  • I don't really like the shootout anymore and I hate ties. I would say get rid of the 3-point games and have an extended overtime until a team scores. 2 points for an overtime win, 0 points for an overtime loss.

I realize that a continuous OT could make for some long games but I don't think the shootout is a good idea and nothing is more pointless than playing a game that doesn't end with a winner.

I agree that overtime should be longer and the loser point should be eliminated (just have wins and losses), but the shootout isn't that bad.

I don't care you have to settle the game with rock paper scissors, ties shouldn't exist in any sport, ever. Ties are games that were never finished. The shootout isn't perfect, but I'd choose every possible alternative one could imagine over a tie.

One regulation-length overtime period to decide it, but if no scoring occurs then the game is a tie. The problem is that the NHL uses points to rank playoff qualifiers. I wish they'd change that to the method the NFL employs - win percentage.

Any other method would be more intricate, and the simplest method is best.

Never end games in ties. i agree with the longer overtime, but shoot outs arent that bad. jsut get rid of that loser point, you are right. in the MLB, teams dont get anything from losing in extras, in the NBA teams dont get anything from losing in OT. so just give the two points to the winner and the loser gets nothing

i hate ties so much, gives me feelings which i would compare to kissing my sister if i had one.....

shootouts are ok with me,id rather see it get bumped up to 5 shooters per team though, i agree though, the loser point should be tossed...
