How did you train YOUR heeler to herd?

After a puppy learns "sit", "lie down", and "come", is it best to start your puppy around the herd from the beginning, or to train basic herding commands BEFORE introducing the puppy to the herd, and how so?

I have a herd of about 40 horses, and I'm looking into Heeler pups. I would appreciate a nice, serious, and honest opinion.

have to agree with rayven. i thought the question was not aimed for a small, inexperienced pooch to herd huge horses. even the best-trained adult dogs can get seriously injured when herding horses.

Serious and honest answer: Bad idea. I don't know anyone who would risk their dog on herding horses. One well aimed and timed kick and you have a dead dog.
