Why does everyone think mainstream music sucks so much?

Because a majority of it does. Of course all mainstream artists aren't talentless, but you can't deny now that music is more about image and less about actual talent now. Take Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, Selena Gomez, and Justin Bieber (just naming the first few that came to mind) for example. Sure, some of the people i listed may posses a bit of talent, but most of their music is just repetitive and the lyrics are mediocre at best. Did you hear that Katy Perry actually tied one of Michael Jackson's records? Explain to me how that's possible. Because her album Teenage Dream is like crap compared to Michael's Thriller. Also, let me say this. If Katy Perry weighed over 200 pounds and wasn't what is considered 'pretty' by the unrealistic standards of Hollywood, would he music be doing do well, and would she have as much fans as she does now? Most likely, the answer is no. Because that's how shallow people are. A lot of them don't care about the music, they care about looks, simple as that.

Does that mean i don't listen to some mainstream artists? No, it doesn't. I do listen to some actually, i listen to whatever music i choose to listen to, but i'd like for it to be a bit intelligent, i like music with good lyrics. Also, nothing annoys me more than stuck up hipsters that refuse to listen to something because it's 'too mainstream', so i understand where you're coming from with that aspect, however as stated above, i do think that a large majority of mainstream music is just pointless, water-downed pop that no one will remember in years to come.

Mainstream Music Sucks

The reason why mainstream music sucks is people there are way too many morons who support it. If they did not support it and buy into it then it would change. I think a large amount of kids and even adults have never been able to think for themselves. They have always relied on television and media to tell them what is hip and cool. I know too many people who have no interest in venturing outside of the box and exploring other avenues of art and music. They rely on the radio and television to tell them what is cool and relevant. When I was a kid growing up in the 80 s and 90 s there was a large variety of music genres that were considered mainstream. A lot of it was god awful but at least there were bands who knew a thing or two about actual musicianship. Do we see any of that in mainstream music today? Coldplay is struggling to stay relevant and the fact that they changed their entire sound to cater to a bunch of people who simply need something catchy and hooky in their lives is pretty ******* sad. Musicianship is dead. I am a songwriter and I am also a dj at a local college. The two do not go hand in hand. I am sad and shocked that I play music for kids who take ex Disney and Nickelodeon/turned pop starts seriously, however when I tell anyone I am a songwriter and give them my cd they likely just throw it in their backseat and forget about it. I am not saying people do not have the right to find something in current pop music that may be appealing....but I am saying people should not be afraid to explore and think for themselves. There is a lot of really good music out there that can be discovered. Stop drinking the kool aid and choking on everything the media shoves down your throat. Think for yourself for **** sake otherwise you are the problem why mainstream music sucks.

Because nobody tries to see past the mainstream stuff, yes mainstream music kanye, beiber, katy perry, etc does suck, but that's because it's the only music out there that has enough money to constantly be overplayed on radio and television, there are many good artists today but it disappoints the shitty pop music is played enough to make people think all music today sucks. Today it's just faster and easier for the majority of people to express and spread their opinions on modern music and that's all that is seen. There was terrible music back then as well but nowdays it's far easier for the majority of people who don't like certain music to express it to the point where everyone thinks music nowdays is going to **** and it really isn't. Take time to explore the full range of music out there

Because it does suck. It's just the same bs that's overproduced and fake as can be. Most mainstream artists don't even write their own songs, let alone sing them live. They do some stupid choreographed dance and lip sync. Now don't get me wrong, there is some good talent, like Justin Timberlake, but there's not very much. It's unoriginal and degrading. Talking about making money, doing drugs, and sex. It's pointless bs. Mainstream music can kiss my ****.

Envy mimics - Anthony is desperate to get the seat of adoration but they don't have any character so they mimic. Imagine one envious character in the mainstream and millions of envious mimickers after about a decade they're all going to be envy and they all become what.. Yeah what America said is a shame - a poet. Civil tort - privacy invasion, objectification of intimacy and character theft. They all end up the same mold and that is the poet - they use agony and intimacy. They become a cookie cutter mold because envy has no character, hence they have no regard - the invade privacy/objectify and reap profit from private acts and people with intimacy and agony.

I have to admit, there are a few 'new' 'mainstream' artists I like. But the thing is, nowadays, everything seems to be auto tune! Everyone said they hate rebecca black, but she's a good example of today music, and how much auto tuning is a part of peoples lives!

Mainstream music sucks because

it is cheap throw-together crap.

There is no originality.

And every song is about sex

I don't think it sucks I just think it gets crammed down your throat so much you start hating it. Also when you meet people who are into the same indie groups you are, it's like you met a member of your tribe.

Because of Overplay. There's little variety in pop music of any era, but this is changing due to the Internet. Today, people have more control of what they want to listen to, thus people are actually more tolerant.
