Its usually pretty nice and warm/hot weather during the time period in which you will be visiting.
Its been wierd lately and rained alot but it should be sunny by than. I think you picked a relatively good weather week to go to New York
Night times its great around 60-70 degrees during the day time its been in the 80s
Unless you get cold very very easily you dont need a sweater you can go outside in shorts in this kind of weather

Temperatures are usually in the low to mid 80's during the afternoon and cool off to the mid to upper 60's by 6 am the next day. Some days can be as warm as the 90's or as cool as the 70's. Most days are usually sunny and humid but we do get an occasional rainy day or a pop-up thunderstorm during a sunny day. Temps should be in the 70's during the night because the low temp usually isn't reached until 6 am the next day after a gradual cool down starting in the late afternoon. The ocean temps are usually at their warmest in the upper 70's and that time of year is the best time to go to the beach there. Also, that is hurricane season and NYC is prone to hurricanes and is overdue for a major one (category 3 or more) according to many weather services so the area is at a very high risk for one. I just don't want you to see a hurricane moving up the coast and assume it will weaken to just a rainstorm because the waters are too cold which is a myth. Also watch out for rip currents at the beach because storms down south still can produce dangerous rip currents in NY.

August Weather:
Average High: 83°F (28°C)
Average Low: 69°F (21°C)
August can be quite hot and humid, though it's a bit cooler and drier than July, especially later in the month. If you want to go to any of the movies or free concerts in New York City parks, bring a blanket and pack a picnic dinner -- you can even bring some wine and beer if you're discrete. It's a great experience and truly gives you a taste of being a local New Yorker.

Well it's been raining everyday for the past 2 weeks and it's been kinda cold in CT which is 2 hours away from NYC. So i would imagine it's sorta the same. It's actually even windier in the city. July should be much warmer though. Just bring a couple of hoodies. It's usually hot but GLOBAL WARMING...

= September Weather:
Average High: 76°F (24°C)
Average Low: 61°F (16°C)
September continues to be a warm month in New York City, but many of the summer crowds have left and evenings can be a bit cooler as the month wears on.
- summer crowds decrease, particularly families, as children return to school
September is still warm enough and early enough in the fall to avoid the price hikes for peak travel

Ruby, it should be warm yet. But, in the evenings, you may need a light jacket or sweater. Sandals are OK. You'll love NYC. Have a great time!
