My dog is giving birth!!...?

Please dont just say go to the vet, it's 1 am and its impossible.

I can handle this myself.

I did not mean to breed her.

She had her first pup and she is not letting it drink, she keeps scratching at the bedding making a bed..but she is not allowing it to drink. ???

Obviously the second puppy is coming quite fast behind the first. Newborn puppies can survive without immediately taking any nourishment form mum so don't force this situation. It is obviously important that all the puppies take the first milk from mum because this will give them natural immunity, for the first 5 weeks or so of their life. However, it's usually necessary to put the puppies already born into a warm box while the next one comes because of the danger of mum trampling on them during the next delivery. Depending on how strong the contractions she's having are, or not, you could encourage her to lie down and allow this puppy to suckle, but it totally depends on the circumstances. This is where a mentor would have been so useful - somebody to be there to see what's going on, and judge what might work, and what might not.

You don't need a vet, unless mum goes on struggling with a puppy delivery. That should not be allowed to continue for much longer than 1 hour, after which time, you must get to a vet. All vets have emergency numbers, and frankly I always alerted my vets to the fact my bitches had started the whelping process, so they could give me an emergency contact number.

If this puppy is quiet, just keep it warm (absolutely vital - puppies that get morbidly chilled won't/cant' suckle) until mum settles down a bit. The act of suckling will stimulate contractions too.

She will feed once all pups are born as she is still in labour at the moment. Just make sure all pups mouths & noses are clear of afterbirth & that their cords ain't bleeding badly but other than that leave her be. Offer her a drink after she's had a couple of pups & a big feed after she delivers. some people collect all the afterbirth 7 don't let the ***** eat it but i just make sure there is an after birth for each pup but allow the ***** to eat it if she wishes. if she has a big litter she may not eat them all though.

The pups should come no longer than 1 hr apart with 20mins being the average.

let the dog get comfortable she is irrated and in pain as soon as she is in a comfortable position she should let it drink if she licked it clean then her instincs are working if in 10 or more minutes she still is not letting it drink then you need to help the puppie onto the dogs nipple yourself.

Usually they don let the pups dink until the are done giving birth. The pups should find their way to her while she is sleeping. And it seems that dogs give birth at the worst times. My dog has given birth to two litters at 2:30 in the morning.
