Will it harm them if i feed them cat food?

I found two puppies Sunday out on the road, so took them in, they i would think be about two or three weeks old, i at this time do not have much money, because i have a cat, i have the dry cat food, would it hurt them if i let the puppies eat the cat food? thank for any reply's.

Update:

I didn't say i haven't fed them yet, of course i have been feeding them some baby milk a woman next door gave me but it's run out now so i had to give them normal milk, but i noticed they went and started eating the cats food, what I've got is what I've got for now until next week.

Yep, cat food is wrong for dogs. At that young of an age they need puppy replacer formula. Pet food stores carry it. Not milk! Many dogs are lactose intolerant.

Any port in a storm, thankfully you are caring for these puppies. Unfortunately if the puppies are still very young and are not weaned they will not be capable of eating anything. They will be ill if they drink cows milk, they need a special formula for puppies. You can buy this from a vet or a pet shop.

But as you are short of cash, you should contact a rescue society for help OR consider the consider the following.

If you live in the UK and you unemployed or on any benefits you can get free treatment for your dog. All you need is proof of your benefits. Even if it’s just reduced council tax you can apply to the PDSA or Dogs Trust for their help. I think that Blue Cross might also help.

There are vets in other parts of the world who will agree to spread the payments, consequently you should telephone them and ask before you arrange an appointment. There is also an organisation called Credit Care, Google Creditcare for dogs however this may not be available in the UK.

Today is Thursday, you found 'em 4 days ago and haven't fed 'em anything yet? Hate to break it to you but, they're dead.

    Jus kiddin......

If they are 2-3 weeks old, they have no teeth and are not yet weaned off mothers milk. They will not survive without proper care, but you can probably find someone at a shelter who knows how to do it.

If they have teeth, then they can survive on solid food even though they might not yet be experienced with it. Plop 'em down in front of the cat food, hand feed 'em a few bits if necessary. If they don't eat it at first, soak it in lukewarm water and try again.

They'll be fine with the cat food. Dog food is better for 'em, next time you get around to it.

It won't hurt them to eat cat food necessarily, but it's better for them to eat puppy food. If they are really only two weeks old you might need to find them some milk replacer because most puppies are not fully weaned until they are four to six weeks old. If they will eat moistened dry puppy food you will probably be OK.

The big difference between cat food and dog food is that cat food is usually much higher in protein content than dog food and higher in calories. It's richer, so to speak, and while it won't be harmful in the short term it may be difficult to get the puppies to eat puppy food.

it would hurt them if they have nothing but the cat food to eat because cats and dogs have different nutritional needs so their foods are completely different...cat food is also too rich for a dog their bodies cant process all of the iron that cats have in their food, so if you have dog food out for him but make sure he isnt eating the cats food all of the time he should be fine

Call your local vet, or animal shelter and see if they can help you figure out the correct age of the dog first. Then they will recommend what to feed them.

You could always just cook up some meat, if they're old enough.

cat food softened in warm water can be a substitute for puppy chow for a short time. Your going to have to wean them on to puppy chow when you get it though.

depends on how young, Dogs usually have very strong stomachs, you can never go wrong with milk though, i know peanut butter or ham won't hurt them either.
