What is a good crate engine for a 1973 International Scout II?

I am trying to find out what a few different crate engine option's I have to put in a 1973 Scout II. I have heard Chevy, Ford, Pontiac, Chrysler and of course the standard 345 but I want a lighter engine and more speed than the 345 has to offer.

My budget is plus or minus $5,000 and I want to get the best engine I can get.

What I would like to be able to do is add parts to the engine down the road as I go to add more power to the engine like turbo or supercharger etc.

I was strongly considering a stroker engine but am not sure what company would be best for that.

I have heard that certain Chevy crate engines will drop right in to the scout II and I willn't have to switch out the drive train or anything. I think I heard that even the motor brackets would be good.

I have tried forums but I have gone days and still have no help as most the people on those sites view your thread and do not respond to help.

If anyone can help here I would appreciate it a lot.

Many thanks,

- Dave

Well you cant beat the Chevs for options. They are by far the most common motors for the aftermarket so there are tons of choices at all sorts of power and price levels. The small blocks are also easy to find used since they went into so many trucks. As far as the specifics of how they fit I am not sure. When I was tinkering with IH's I was going to keep the IH motor so I never looked much into swaps. Since its not likely a bolt in process perhaps you want to look at something else different? How about a Cadillac 500? They are slightly smaller and lighter than a BB Chev. In stock form they had more power. There are a few companies that make performance parts for them which I dont think is the case for the IH. You can still find them, they were in 70-74 Eldorados and in all 75-76 cads. 68-74 most of the cads had a 472 which is just shorter stroke. 77-79 was the 425 which was the same external block but about 100 lbs lighter than the 500.
