Just to add what the first author mentioned, the histologic sample that will be obtained from the biopsy will give the patient's physician "a lay of the land" so to speak, in other words it'll tell the physician just how much viable, healthy tissue there is in proportion to the scarred, non-functioning tissue (relative ratio) and essentially assign a grade to the degree of fibrosis at the cellular level. This will be important in helping the physicians make a plan of treatment in the event that a liver transplant becomes indicated or possible for the patient.

If the MRI showed a mass then the biopsy will check for cancer. If the MRI showed signs of cirrhosis (scarring) then the biopsy will confirm that.
