How do I make a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter output audio?

I have a new MacBook Pro that is supposed to be able to do this, but I can't figure out how to make it work. Thanks!

    You need an adapter that specifically supports HDMI audio on Macs. A lot of cheapie adapters won't do it. If it does, you can check in System Preferences -> Sound and look under output devices to see if it's listed.
