A question about giving a housewarming gift.?

Question

A friend who has just retired from the military has moved into a rent house. He does not want to buy a new home until he has a better idea about the his next job and where it will be. He has said the he wants me to come to his home for dinner but has not yet given the formal invitation.  Tonight my wife and I are picking he and his wife up for an evening out. Should I present to them a housewarming gift now, or wait till we have dinner at their home? And should I do this for their rent house or wait till they move into a permanent dwelling?

If your friend has made it clear that the rent house is temporary (as in a year or less), then you should hold off on the house warming gift until he gets a permanent place. But if you want to give a gift anyway, which is fine, then you should probably wait until you are invited over before giving it.

I would wait until he invites you to his house.  If he is clear it is just a temporary stop i would take him a nice bottle of wine or some chocolates and then wait until he moves in to a permanent home and then think about a house warming gift.  When you see him you could talk about that and ask him in general what kind of things would be helpful to him as house warming gifts.  Don't make it too specific in case he suggests something that can't afford or don't want to buy.

You can do for both, but wait to present the gifts at their home.  However, giving a gift tonight would certainly NOT be in bad taste :)

If they are having a housewarming party then give them something if they in vite you for dinner you can bring a bottle of wine, or desert or something.
