Question for the automotive technicians out there...?

It seems that one of my fiance's co-workers likes to make fun of me because I am a mechanic... She says it's a "Brainless Job" and you could teach a monkey to be a mechanic. After going to school for general automotive technology and BMW specific training for 18 months - 7 hours a day, working as a BMW Master certified tech for 7 years as well as independent shops for 12 years & acquiring most of the ASE certs, MACS A/C cert, and MANY BMW update classes, I kind of find offense to that statement. Made me laugh a bit as well.... What do you guys think? Is being an auto tech a "mindless" job?

Modern cars are rather complicated "toys". When something goes wrong, especially something that the built in diagnostic kit does not pin point, it needs a keen diagnostic mind, and one that is trained and experienced with such problems to find and solve the problem.

It is a real pleasure to find competence in this area.

But there are a lot of mechanics who are pretty 'unclever' too, and, alas, most people have come across them more often than the clever ones! Hence the reputation.

Nope. At least not someone who takes the trade seriously. Unfortunately the bias against mechanics is almost universal. Very few folks know or care to know anything of complex systems or how they work. Every mechanic is a crook and or an idiot to these shallow dolts who know nothing. Ignore this woman's comments. You'll get your chance one day when she has a question and asks your fiance to ask you what it could be.
