Why do Indian Americans give their children Indian names?

I've noticed that many other ethnic groups in America usually give their children American names but Indians tend to give their children Indian names. Is this because of religion or Indian pride or what?

Thanks for answering! I really appreciate it!

PS. Not trying to generalize or anything. I am aware that other ethnic groups give their children ethnic first names and Indian children sometime have English names.

I'm Indian-American (Born and raised), I was named an Indian name since my parents were immigrants to the country so they thought naming me an Indian name would be cool and they pretty much only knew indian names.Well if I have kids in the future I will name my kids 'American" names instead of Indian. so the Indian Americans who do name their kids Indian names are most likely new immigrants.

To keep their culture and who they are. The American indians were forced to become like the white Europeans because of their advanced progress and so aboriginals everywhere were stripped of culture, land, and people. Today many people coming to america refuse to learn english, which really would be benificial to them, and cause communication problems.

I am Indian, and even if I settle down and have a child with a White girl (and I probably will) I will still give my child an Indian name. My name is Indian and it sounds fking cool!!!

Because there trying to keep a touch of their culture it's more rare to see other people with those names you know nobody want to have the same old plain name as other people!

A lot of "American" names didn't originate in America you idiot.

Megan is a Welsh name. Why did your parents give you a Welsh name?

They want their children to remember who they are and where they came from. You have to know where you've been, to know where you are going.

it's pride in their culture and language, and they would like their child to feel part of that as well.
