If you had any respect for them, do it to their face. At least then they can take you seriously, rather than thinking it as some joke your friend made you do. And you feel less guilty knowing that you're talking to them personally.

it is always better to do it face to face because that is less cowardly and better overall for both of you
whatever you do, don't break up over a text message or facebook. call them at the very very least

to their face is the best way but stick to your decision, my ex broke up with me by txt and a hate her for that. good luck
