A charge of -2.15 nC and a charge of -6.15 nC are separated by a distance of 30.0 cm. Find the position at which a third charge of +7.60 nC can be placed so that the net electrostatic force on it is zero.

Let C1 = -2.15 nC & C2 = -6.15 nC
Let f be the fractional distance from the smaller charge where the net electric field is zero.
C1/f² = C2/(1-f)² →
(C2/C1 - 1)*f² +2f -1 = 0 = 1.86f² + 2f -1; Using the quadratic formula,
f = .3716
Ergo, d = .3716*30 = 11.15 cm from the -2.15 nC charge and (30 - 11.15) = 18.85 cm from the other.
