I'm starting nightclub photography...need help with kit?!?
I have a Nikon D80...I know I should probably get a flash that I can mount on the hotshoe, any suggestions for a good/affordable one? What kit in general would you reccommend?

Starting point will be an SB600 or 700. Problem with these flashguns is you will need to carry a pocket full of batteries as you'll be eating through them very quickly in the dark environment of the club. You may want to think about a bigger powerpack, perhaps have a look at the Metz 45 CL4 with a P76 external battery pack, this probably gives you enough power on one battery. Make sure you use the omnibounce, and consider getting yourself a Gary Fong lightsphere.
For your lens, have a look at the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8. I would say the Non VC version is a little better as you can manually override the focus at any time. Plus with flash you don't need VC.
Since you may be working around drunk people it may be an ideal to arrange some insurance, if your company doesn't offer it already.

If you're on a tight budget, look for a Sigma 24-70 f2.8 lens and a Nikon SB800 flash. Your ideal would be to upgrade to a Camera like the Nikon D3 as it's high end ISO's are very low in noise, allowing you to make the most of any ambient light and reduce the amount of flash you are blasting at the subject (ideally bounced off ceilings or walls).

SB-600 or 700
Fast and wide lens, Tamron's 17-50 f2.8 is a popular beginners choice. Depending on how rowdy your crowds get you may also want to invest in a top of the range protective filter.
Don't forget your hearing protection, get some of those made to measure things, that way you will not be totally deaf when you're 40.

You'd certainly need an external flash unit. Refer the manual that came with your camera to see the flash units compatible with your camera.
I'd agree with the recommendations made by the first comment above.

be careful... most nightclubs won't allow flashes...
get a camera with good high end ISO availability... and a fast lens with large aperture...
just what are you shooting???
