Where can I go for a long time for not very much money?

Hello.

I've had seriously itchy feet recently and really want to go backpacking.

I don't really mind were, but I'd rather get a one way ticket and come back when I feel like it, so I'm trying to think of somewhere that would be fun, cheap and doesn't involve a visa for a person coming from the UK.

Where would you guys suggest?

Central America! Guatemala is a good bet. Backpacking is just right for this part of the world. Fly into Guatemala City and take a bus or shuttle to Antigua. A good place to stay her is Hotel de Cortez y Larraz which is part of the original home the owners grew up in. You can make arrangements with Ian to pick you up at the airport. They still live there and are very helpful. Rooms are basic and clean. Breakfast is about $2.00. Lake Atitlan is a must see with wonderful backpacker places. Go to Chichicastenango for market day. Posada el Arco is an exceptional place for $25 double. Quetzaltenango is a great place to explore. Fuentes Georginas Hot Springs was heavily damaged by mud slids last year, but may be up and running again. If not, Patricia at Hotel de Cortez can hook you up with a hot spring that was not damaged. A really great hostel is Finca Tatin on the Rio Dulce River (up from Livingston which is only accessable by boat and down from Rio Dulce Town. Tikal is out of this world. The ruins and holler monkeys are awesome! Livingston is a great place to eat, drink, and dance! Oh, check out Backpacers in Rio Dulce Town. Wish I had room to write more!

Thailand . Without a visa you can stay there for 30 days. But as always there is a loop hole. Cross the border into Cambodia , even for an hour and they will extend it for another 30 and so on, and so on. It is very easy to do and almost every travel agents office has what they call a "Visa Run " where they take you to the border with others in a mini bus, you walk across the border and back with your papers stamped for another month. It is very common and an accepted practice. It is also cheap to do.
