How are finches as pets?

I am wanting to get a pet that my kids can enjoy and help to care for and someone mentioned finches. I've heard that they are more to look at rather than interact with but that they make really great little pets. Is this true? Any additional information on finches would be great since I've never owned any birds.

They don't come out of it's cage and play. They are more like decorative birds not companion birds. If you want one to interact, Budgies, Lovevbird or Parrotlet would be a better choice. They are nice little birds.

Finches can sing beautifully. They just like people to look at them but they will fly away if you open their cage. If you don't have much time, Finches are right for you but if you have time, other birds are better.

Budgies are known as the best pet bird to buy. They are like finches, very easy to care for but you can interact with one. They are really talkative too! The record is a Budgie saying 1728 words! They have great personality.

Lovebirds are GREAT with kids but require a bit more care than Budgies and Finches but not that much work. It is a myth that if you buy one it will die. They make great pets and will entertain you.

Parrotlet are known as the most gentle bird. This is true. Because of this they do really well with kids. They are small like finches but you can interact with one. Also known as Forpus, these clown will be your kid's best friend!

If you want a Finch, be sure to buy two not one. Parrotlet, Budgies and Lovebird need to be taken out of it's cage once a week. Some links:

All birds can be nippy and aggressive depending on how well you take care of it.

I currently own six zebra finches and think that they can be a great starter pet for children in certain cases. They are in essence, like fish because you shouldn't handle them unless you plan on moving them to another cage to clean theirs or to check their nails or feathers when needed. If your children are okay with birds that they can't actually handle and enjoy watching their antics then finches are a good choice. Just make sure that your kids realize that they shouldn't open the cage or try to play with them because they are quite small birds. I would recommend either zebra finches or society finches. Any other finch species tend to be more for veteran bird owners and require a higher level of care and maintenance. They are both inexpensive and can be found at any local pet store. There is a ton of info on either out there and I highly recommend doing research on any bird you intend to purchase to avoid any surprises. I hope that helped!

Finches would be a good starter bird if you don't have experience. It is true that they aren't as easy to interact with as parrots are, but they certainly are wonderful to watch. A good bird for kids would be a hand raised cockatiel that is friendly. They are not too difficult to care for, but a smaller parrot might be a better option for someone who hasn't owned birds. Budgies are pretty great, they aren't always as friendly as cockatiels, but they are cute and have beautiful colours. They might be fascinating to kids as well since they are so small, they are like mini parrots! But before you consider buying any bird, it's a good idea to do lots of research. I hope this helps, good luck! :)
