the pocket is the place where the quarter back throws the ball if he doesn't roll out. any ways the linesmen pass block forming a wedge around the quarterback so he has time to throw it. if there isn't sufficient blocks though, than the quarterback will be sacked or will throw it away, creating an incomplete.

it's the area that the quarterback is in behind the centre when he's setting up to throw the ball.
