Nigel,
First it is important to note both are LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) TVs. The difference is in how the panel is illuminated; via CCFL (compact fluorescent bulbs), commonly referred to as "LCD", or LEDs (light emitting diodes), commonly referred to as LED.
The LCD sets used to be the standard and provided great performance and economical prices. Most manufacturers are now moving towards the LED screens, particularly on the larger screen sizes. So if you are looking at a quality set in something say 46" or larger the chances are you'll be getting an LED set regardless.
I disagree that the energy usage is much of a difference. In fact most TVs now have an energy sticker on it that will tell you the estimated cost for energy usage (at least in California they do). If you look at two comparably sized TVs (LCD vs LED) you'll find dollars difference - not a figure I would base my buying decision on.
The LED TVs do tend to be a little lighter and a little shallower, but they do tend to be a little more expensive.
So at the end of the day IF you can find an LCD TV that you like just as much as the LED, and it is less expensive, go for it. The technology is still great. However, I think you'll find most of the nicer sets are LED regardless. That opens up a new question of which model of LED is right for you! ;)
PS - Check out the Samsung D8000 series TVs, we have had great luck with them.

LCD and LED both have LCD panels (Liquid Crystal Display). The difference is in the way the panels are lit.
LCD TV's have compact flourescent tubes lighting the panel whereas LED TV's have an army of miniature people like oompah-loompahs holding torches at the screen.
If in doubt, remember that LCD stands for Literally Crap Device and LED stands for Lovely Excellent Device. Also, most LCD TV's these days are sold to people from council estates with rickets.

LED TV is LCD. LED TVs use LED technology and have a brighter and consistently sharper picture than the older backlighting technology that uses fluorescent lighting. It will also last much longer. And LED is more expensive, and the difference is in the type of lighting used. LED uses a different type of backlighting.

The LEDs are more expensive but they have better picture quality and they save a lot on electricity.
