My car is a 1997 Cavalier, 2.2L
Here's a list of parts my mechanic says have to be replaced for my car to be in working coniditon.
Upper and Lower radiator hose
Heater hose
Coolant Fortifier
Coolant system vac and exchange
Power steering hose
Steering gear
Power steering flush
Alightment
AND TO TOP IT OFF
Rack and Pinion
The estimate they gave me is $1700.
My dads mechanic says he can do it for $1200
So if you were in this situation, what would you do?
I have a budget of around $550 a month between insurance and a car payment.
Factor in that I'm only 19, and that's basically impossible
No, my dads not doing it. My dads friend who's a mechanic. He's charging $40/hour labor instead of around 75.

Your 1997 Cavalier is probably worth less than $2000 in good operating condition. It seems kind of foolish to put $1200 into it, because nothing on your list will improve the value of the car. It's still worth less than $2000.
You should sell the car for whatever you can get for it, and buy something else. Think Honda or Toyota.

To help you decide go out on the internet and find a "loan calculator". Select an amount you think you can spend on a new car and then have a look at what the payments will be over the span of three or five years [never take a 7 year car loan!!] Then go back and compare that to the cost of repairs. Think you can manage to fix and hang on to that car for two more years while you build up a down payment? I think that's what you will do. A little reading about car maintenance will help you along as well. Things like radiator and heater hose Power steering hose are items that anyone of average ability should be able to do on their own. Fix it, drive it, save some money and improve your automotive acumen a bit and you'll be in much better shape than a broke kid with a derelict car and no knowledge. Oh, a couple of Items on your list are repeated or simply pure BS! Coolant Fortifier? WTF?

you have a leak someplace contained in the device. The pump itself could be undesirable, a hose could be leaking or the guidance container / rack (counting on which your motor vehicle has) could be leaking. the cost could be very minimum (tightening a connection) of it could run into hundreds of dollars. do no longer placed off the restore, by using fact working ability guidance pump whilst low on fluid reasons extreme placed on on it. you're able to finally end up having to interchange a pump, alongside with the cost of the unique restore!

Sell it or have dad do it. I'm sure dad will give you a loan. If he won't, beg!
