Dreams are composed and caused by spirits for various reasons such as
1. As a part of the game they play with other spirits
2. To alert the person who dreams
3. To sooth the spirits which are angry with you
Still there may be some other reasons.
A human being is living with many spirits which joined one by one since birth. These spirits watch, guide and determine the destiny of a person from his/her daily activities, talks and thoughts too.
To interpret a dream one needs the complete history of a person who dreamed. Without complete details one cannot interpret properly. You know your life well, therefore, only you can guess what it is. To interpret a dream you must have thorough knowledge of your own self. You must keep in memory all you have done in the past. For every action there will be a reaction. So also for talks and thoughts. Once you pick-up the point then you can easily guess what spirits say.

The way dreams are generated and their meaning is a contentious issue among neuroscientists and others working in the field. The sense organs are effectively shut off during the dream state and sensory information is still being sent to the back of the brain where sensory information is processed as a model of the external world from which we act. The sensory information being sent during dreams is thought to be generated from what we experienced the previous day and before but filtered through symbols. For example if you were worried about your shop closing you might dream about a cliff edge coming closer and closer. Some theorize that if the brain were to give you the literal meaning it would wake you up.
Psychotherapists look at dreams as unfiltered information about our experience of our own life. Unfiltered by repression, psychological defenses and the like. They look at dreams and apply them to their client's lives as metaphors to understand the client better (and/or get the client to see themselves better).

When you sleep your propioceptive senses are shut down. Your brain, which is still active, becomes sensory deprived. So it starts constructing a fictional world out of memories, both long and short term, and fills in gaps of awareness with some smoothing process that makes you unaware of discrepancies, edges, contradictions, and absurdities. Even during sleep or dreams the unconscious is still very much active. It is only the awake consciousness that is temporarily not there. During sleep we can still have a self awareness type of consciousness. As the first reply indicates sex can pay an important role in dreams but also feelings of vulnerability, control, fear, rage, sadness, love, compassion, and all of the emotions.

dreams are when your brain is shuffling through all your memories and thoughts deciding which ones to keep. it mixes a lot of different thoughts at a time though so thats why some dreams are of crazy impossible things

You are telling yourself stories. I suggest you tell yourself to shut up and go back to sleep.
