How do I get my midi controller to play through my computer?

I have an M-Audio 88es Keystation and a Windows 7 computer. I would like to be able to practice piano on the computer.

I can turn on Band in a Box and play the keyboard and it works, but there are latency issues making it difficult to play.

I am hooking it up USB to USB. Would MIDI to MIDI be faster, less latency?

Is the software the issue? Is there some simple, small and fast program that can do this? This is the only thing for which I would need this program.

Do I need to just buy a standalone sequencer?

Go there. Find a standalone virtual instrument... maybe a simple synthesizer or something.

Again, I agree with Lucas Man.
