external HDD stopped working on my macbook pro?

so its a 2.5" data external HDD, its worked great for 6 months or so, and recently its been taking longer and longer to be recognized by my Mac. (so I was thinking it was ready to fail, so i bought a new one to put all my movies n stuff on.) i plugged n the old one today, and the finder won't even recognize it.

But the weird thing is, when i plug it in it will start spinning, and light up, then it will show up in Disk Utility, then once the light on the HDD stopped blinking and goes solid it disappears completely from the computer.

if anyone has any ideas i would love to hear them, i really want my movies back.

thanks

Update:

well its a WD passport 1TB, it is not my Time Machine,

Plugged it into my Alienware m15x running vista and it did show up. will a reformat and such be good enough to bring it back to life? or am i hoping too much?

    That`s weird.

    Which brand you have ?

You might have problem in your Macbook, but better make a test 11st.

Plug your External HDD to another Computer or PC with windows, check if it works or got the same problem, unless your using it as Time machine, wont work on Windows based PC.

    wish you luck
