Cambridge International AS Level and A Level Physics Coursebook http://goo.gl/oGzfp. It covers all the material required for the Cambridge syllabus. The accompanying Student's CD-ROM includes many more questions linked to each chapter, including multiple choice, how to tackle the examinations, and animations, a glossary and summaries.

You generally won't impress anyone in a personal statement by saying you have read books - but the wonderful Feynman Lectures mentioned by someone else. might be an exception. However if you claim you have read certain books, and have an interview, be prepared to talk about the books and what you found stimulating.about them - anyone can claim to have read anything.

Also try 'The Emperors' New Mind' by Roger Penrose. Large and heavy going, but fascinating.
