Dog Rash and Itching?
Before anyone rants at me, my dog has an appointment with the vet on monday (soonest they could get her in given she isn't considered an "emergency"). I'm just looking for ideas. Input.
Long story short: we boarded her this past Friday to Monday morning. She had some loose stool the morning i picked her up (Monday). Got her home, it was like an eruption of poo and jelly-like gunk for that whole afternoon. One eruption had flecks of blood in the jelly gunk. She threw up twice. Called the vet, they had me fast her for 12 hours and then put her on chicken/rice.
Well, today i noticed her itching a lot so i flipped her over and saw that her belly was bright red all over, some areas looked inflamed slightly, and there where some blood red irritated areas on chest and throat. She's digging at her feet and scratching everywhere else.
No fleas, no new food (except for the bland diet), and the kennel didn't give her anything new and no reports of anything similar in the other dogs. She's otherwise acting okay.
Any ideas? Vet doesn't think it's an emergency so i'm just looking for input on what it could be. First thought was fleas but she's on Advantix and i checked her - nothing. So then I was thinking maybe it's allergies to the rice or chicken? She's on a fish/potato kibble normally because we thought she had corn allergies... but she's have chicken/rice before with no problem.
Just looking for input. Plus, i don't like to see my girl uncomfortable.
I work at the place i board her (groomer), so i know for a fact no other dogs have the runs or any rashes (though the runs aren't uncommon - stress can do it, or change of diet). And she's been there before with no issue. But anything is possible. Like i said, just looking for ideas i can bring up with the vet on monday.
Note: just thought i would add that she's four years old and UTD on shots.
TY all for the answers - so far i agree with just about everyone in some sense. She actually had more diarrhea last night into this morning and threw up a light brown liquid just a few minutes ago. Very worrying.
The vet said "the best we can do" is for me to bring her in between 9 and 11:30 and wait and hope for someone to be able to see her. I'm definitely re-thinking this vet - it seems silly that they can't get a possible emergency case in!
If no one gets to me between 9 and 11 i'm going to be calling around. I guess i just prefer her be seen by someone at this time by a vet who has all her records.....

To relieve itching, a cool bath (not to the point of her shaking of course) will soothe the itching. Use oatmeal shampoo.
Sorry to say but I can only think of 2 things....allergies or mange. sarcoptic mange is highly contagious. Hope she didn't contract that!

The diarrhea and goo is a revolt in the GI tract - she could either be prone to stress diarrhea, or more likely, someone gave her some run-of-the-mill food she does not normally eat - to which she obviously had an allergic reaction.
Fast her for now, then get her back on her normal food - although everyone likes chicken and rice, her body was happy with fish and potato - seriously, I would just soak some of that, and feed her spoonfuls after giving her body about 18 hours of no food just water in order to rest.
The vet could also give you a few Temaril -P for the itching, or a benedryl shot.
This is the very reason it's usually better to leave your dog at home when you go somewhere, under the care of a reputable pet sitter. It not only allows your dog to stay in familiar surroundings without any other upset dogs stressing her out, but also means the only dog food she should get is what you have right there.
I'm curious to know why this vet doesn't feel your dog's situation is an emergency. No doubt if he were itching all over and suffering from a cleanout, he'd want it to be remedied as soon as possible. She must be miserable. Any vet I'd continue to use would know that while it isn't life threatening by any means, the humane things to do is to treat it immediately.

I swear, my Aussie mix had the same thing a couple of weeks ago, minus the diarrhea. Took her into the vet for vaccinations Monday of last week and they looked at it at the time - they had no idea what it was. Gave us a topical spray and some antibiotics. She's with my parents (I'm at school and go home weekends) so I'm not sure if it's cleared up or not, but they said to bring her in if it hasn't after the antibiotics are gone.
It's baffling. And it obviously irritated her because she had been chewing at herself.
Starred.
ADD: As for causes of the *rash* (not so sure about the other) maybe she got into something that irritated her in their grass or something? That's the only cause I can think of for Lexy's rash, though she's in the pasture quite a bit so is exposed to several different things.

I a.swered your other question, but couldnt add on more info. We saw several vets. My dog was only getting worse, so I researched raw diets. I also found out this is common, and deadly for kibble fed dogs. Healthydogforlife.com has some great books, and the author will help you. He's a veteri.ary nutritionist.

I have one dog that has to have a certain food, and gets explosive diarrhea when he eats a different food.
Are you sure they didn't feed her something else while she was there?
The rest sure sounds like an allergic reaction to me. It could be to some chemical they use at the kennel.

I hope they can get you in today. My vet is very busy, but has always been able to fit me in the same day when I asked.

I'd say to get another vet's opinion.
The eruption of diarrhea with jelly substance and flecks of blood, is NOT a good sign. I don't understand WHY this vet told you it doesn't sound bad.. Cause to me, it does.
When my pup had Parvo, she has the same type of diarrhea (with jelly/traces of blood in it.. also the vomiting of course.).. I am NOT saying your dog for sure has Parvo, but I am saying.. it does sound more serious that this vet is wanting to go along with.
Chances are high that she got whatever it is, at the kennel you boarded her at.
Source(s): WHY the tumbs down??? Geez, I don't understand a lot of people on here.
