What do the skulls found in Dead Island actually do?

Question

So last night when I was playing Dead Island I found a orange skull in the supermarket under the stairs and of course I grabbed it but I am very unclear on what they do. I already tried Googling it but all I came up with was the locations for all of them not what the actual use of these are for. So can anyone enlighten me on what they are used for?

I'm guessing they're something to do one the side, like mini side-task missions. I did some reasearch and it says if you pick-up the skulls and drop them off somewhere in a certain place you can get a reward (probably weapons, cash, etc.) That's just me guessing though, I don't really know.

I think the orange skulls are for Steam Achievements.
