Astronomy careers??????

So i love astronomy and i am a freshman in high school but my parents drive me away from it because of the limited careers. How can you make it in astronomy and do you usually study something, make a discovery, get a PhD become a professor and teach what you were taught while you continue to research. I realise that the whole process is much more difficult than that btw. So what options are there in it that are possible to achieve. Also what is available in astrobiology because i really like that but i like astronomy overall. What is the best branch of astronomy to get involved in ( the one with the most future need/growth ) thank you in advance

Astronomy is a competitive field without many jobs, and most require a PhD. But many people with PhDs leave the field each year because they have little choice in jobs and either can't get one or aren't willing to take (or move to) what they can get. You have to be willing to move around and travel a lot. That sounds great at your age, but when you're 30 and moving for the third time in 12 months and need to find ANOTHER subletter to get out of your lease, it's not much fun anymore. Astrobiology isn't very big yet; only a few schools are offering it, and most of the current 'research' is considered pretty poor by scientific standards. Maybe in 15 years when you're entering the job market, that will be different. Radio astronomy is getting big right now due to new instruments coming online; x-ray astronomy is going out of business since we don't have money to build new satellites and you can't do that from the ground.

There are a ton. Don't let your parents drive you away from a career that you are passionate about. I got into the field of astrophysics but there are a few astrobiologists out there (especially now that we're starting to actually discuss the posibilities of extraterrestrial life in a very real sense). There are a lot of good opportunities in the teaching area of Astronomy such as a proffessor at a university and research positions at universities all over the world. Of course there is NASA but that is for the best of the best (which is what you should strive to be anyway!) Astronomy and the many fields of related study are only growing and if you are interested you should definatily persue your interest.
