Why is coal ash bad for the garden?
Coal and lignite are just plant material, so how come rotted compost is good for plants but coal and lignite ash are full of heavy metals etc.? And is peat ash good or bad on the garden?

As with other products, natural or otherwise, a little coal ash can be a good thing but too much isn't,

Coal ash is not bad for the garden actually.

It changes the ph level of the soil probably. You need to do a ph test to see if your soil needs amendments. It may either be too alkaline or too acidic. A ph of 7 I believe is what your looking for but it depends on what you are growing. For instance tomatoes and blueberries love acidic soil.
