My husband wants to transfer from the national guard to active duty. Will he lose rank?
My husband is a 2LT in the national guard with an engineering unit. He wants to transfer to active duty. We already know we need a conditional release from the national guard. My question is what is the availability of his mos in active duty and if everything works out will he be able to keep the same rank?
He went through ROTC so he has an undergraduate degree and already completed EBOLC. Do you happen to know what the availability for engineering officers is in active duty?

Your husband is an O-1, the lowest officer rank, so he cannot go lower. The only problem he might run into is the availability for the position he wants in active duty.

No. you will go into the guards the same rank. Promotions in the guard are slower than active duty and the process is similar for promotions. The big difference for the guards is the availability of slots you are looking to advance to. Since people in the guards can stay until age 60, things get bottle necked the higher in rank you go.

It is possible based on what program he did to get his commission. I know of several former officers from the Guard who had to choose to come in as enlisted because the active duty component would not accept their credentials. You have to remember that the National Guard is a state run component and what the state does doesn't necessarily match up with the Active component. However it will be his choice to give up his commission to get the job he wants.

No he will not lose rank. There are plenty of 2LT positions open in the Army, that will not be a problem

He will not lose rank. All transfers are done at the equivelant rank. The hard part will be getting that release from the NG.

Since they get rank slower int he reserves/NG, yea he may loose his rank and be a LT1, but if his current rank is guaranteed in his active duty contract, he will not loose it.

More than likely. If he's an officer, why doesn't he know something like that anyway?? If he's considering this, why doesn't he ask someone in his personnel section before going further? It will depend on his having a college degree I would bet... does he have one?
Source(s): RN in the guard with an AA degree can become an officer but in active duty you must have a Bachelor's. - 10 years ago
i think it will be easier for your husband to check with the officer .Because there might be some rules and regulation. right ?
