Is this an overcrowded aquarium?
We have a 55 gallon aquarium with 4 fantails and a golden loach. I heard loaches are better in pairs. Would adding another loach be overcrowded? I can go purchase another filter if that would help.

When stocking a tank you need to think about how active the fish is, is it solitary? and how big will it get. You are already overstocked with the 4 fantails as they get quite big, the golden loach should be fine as it has the fantails and they get along quite well.
When thinking about overcrowding, it is not getting another filter that makes all the better. The idea of keeping fish is to keep their lives as natural as possible to what they would find in their natural habitat. This also relates to the size of the tank as fish, especially goldfish require a lot of space to swim and grow.
Hope this helped and all the best, your loach should be fine by itself as it already has company
