Nice base - Basic barracks are just that... there to serve a purpose. A-school barracks are very nice and close to on-base amenities. Hope you like cold weather. Fall is right around the corner.

Congratulations on your decision to serve our country. I appreciate it.

    Best of luck to you!

Ahhh, good ole' Great Mistakes (that's what they call it). It depends on what barracks they assign you to. I was in the old barracks. The old barracks kinda suck but you only have 1 other person in the room with you. The new barracks are nicer, but there's 2-3 other people in your room. It's really hard to sleep when you have that many people walking in and out to go the bathroom, people snoring, farting, coughing, etc. But you'll get used to it. Either way, you don't have a choice, they assign you to the barracks, you don't get to pick.

I haven't been to Great Lakes in over 5 years, but when i was there they had a McDonald's, a NEX, a movie theater, and a MWR center with stuff like pool tables, darts, video games, etc.

There's plenty of stuff to do there. Besides, with all the marching and time and class and mustering for duty and standing watch, you'll likely want to spend your free time sleeping as I did.

While you are in initial entry training in any branch the barracks are pretty spartan. They are meant to be temporary and functional. Not for long term occupation and personal comfort.
