Find the mass of sulfur in the original mixture.?

A mixture of carbon and sulfur has a mass of 9.0g. Complete combustion with excess O2 gives 19.5g of a mixture of CO2 and SO2.

    C+O2--> CO2 ans S+O2 ---> SO2

    the mass of CO2 is 12+2*16= 44g the mass of SO2 is32+16*2=64g

    The relation of the mass of CO2 relative to C is 44/12=3.667

    the relation of mass of SO2 to S is 64/32=2

    so you have 2 equations if x is mass of C a y the mass of S

    x+y = 9 (1)

    3.667x +2y =19.5(2)

    you solve (1) gives y =9-x

    3.667x +18-2x =19.5

    1.667x =1.5

    x=0.9g of carbon and y=9-0.9=8.1g of sulfur

    Carbon And Sulfur

  • 10 years ago

    Very Simple Question

    Molar Mass of C (Carbon) = 12 a.m.u.

    Molar Mass of S (Sulphur) = 32 a.m.u.

    Actual mass of Mixture = 9.0 g

    Sum of Molar Masses = 12+32 = 44 a.m.u.

    44 a.m.u. of mixture gives weight = 9.0 g

    32 a.m.u. of Sulphur will weigh = 32/44*9 = 6.545 g

    You see its very simple.Don't get confused by reading combustion....Answer lies in the front just like engines of hatchback cars....LOL.

    And if you insist over getting those combustion equations solved...her it is :::

    Molar Mass of CO2 = 12+16*2= 44 a.m.u.

    Molar Mass of SO2 = 32+16*2= 64 a.m.u.

    We got weight = 19.5

    then Sulphur in this = 64/44+64 * 19.5 = 64/108*19.5 = 11.5 g

    Carbon then = 19.5-11.5 = 8 g

    To check if my answer is correct

    Make ratio = 11.5/8 = 1.437 = 1.4

    Now Divide the ratio with value of S in original mixture or multiply with value of C.You'll get 9.0 g.Then its right answer.

    Have a nice day!!!
