Is this a little outrageous?
http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/S...
I honestly can't believe this is becoming this big of a deal. I've played hockey for years and I am also a referee, these things are always happening, especially at the uppper levels (15 y/o +) and most refs take it with a grain of salt, if they even hear it at all. I'm sure this happens all the time, it just so happened that Sean Avery didn't like it, and it was caught on camera. Is this a situation where, if you can't take the heat get out of the ktichen? Or should it actually be taken seriously.
GLAAD even issued a statement at the Flyers.
Quite frankly, i think it's ridiculous.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedd... just as a side note, that went unmentioned.
I think the reason why the Simmonds racial incident was so blown up was because it was from a fan. I'm sure there is racial slurs all the time on the ice.
By the way, Alex Frolov said this back in April about Avery.
"Q: Why does everyone hate Avery?
AF: It’s not hate, it’s… He has a specific role, he is a pretty unique man and he likes to do, let’s say, extravagant things. Sometimes they’d be bordering on the forbidden. He isn’t a fool. Lately he has become calmer, smarter. Before he’d get swept away with emotions and do something stupid. To mention each and every one of his stunts… Something always happens around him, it’s a part of his job. He needs to be talked about. He loves it, he feels at home in the spotlight. Sometimes he called opponents “black monkeys.” He did a lot of things, I can’t remember all of them. "
I know I'm going on a rant here, but I just think the guy is a disgrace to the game, between everything he's done, there is just no class. And playing the sport I know chirping like this happens literally hundreds of times a game.

Respectfully, it's wrong. Period. Leave the racial component out of it, the ethnic component, and the homophobia out of it. Just call him a dumb **** or a w***er or an a**hole and be done with it.
It's 2011. Time to move on. Be a bit creative with the chirping. We don't need this crap anymore in the game.
What's not funny is Simmonds' denial when anyone with the remote ability to read lips can, clear as day, see what he said. First he isn't sure, now he knows he didn't? Is he taking the piss?
I'm just happy someone in hockey had the raisins to stand up and say "this is wrong, and should be treated on the same level as a racially charged one."
This is not a Mike Milbury-ing of the game. Swear like a sailor and use the examples I noted. But leave race, ethnicity, and orientation out of it. It's not funny, nor is it particularly creative.

You know that old saying "what happens in Vegas...stays in Vegas"? If Avery or Simmonds had directed an insult that is considered offensive to a ref or fan then we have something to talk about. Anyone who has ever played sports in any serious manner understands that a lot is said on the playing surface between guys. Watch an NFL game...the refs constantly have to walk between 2 opposing players....they arent trading recipes! Avery had no business discussing what anyone on the ice said to another but that is part of the issue with him in the first place. I recall when Bowman asked that Sean be traded away from Detroit he called him...and I quote "the stupidest hockey player I have ever coached". Says a lot about the guy.....as if he needed help. Guys in the heat of battle whether it be hockey, football, baseball, auto racing....whatever say things meant to get to the other guy. How is that accomplished....oh I dont know maybe a racial, homophobic, sister, mother, family type insult? So to answer your original question....yes it is extremely outrageous that Avery so ignorantly brings this up to the media (could have grown a set of balls and challenged Simmonds....oh wait....I'm sorry I confused Sean with a man) and even worse that the PC media turns something that has always and will always happen into something it need not be and one can also wonder if that isnt a form of racism in its own right. The black man is no better type thing....even though they so graciously ignore Seans own homophobic, racist, womanizing antics in the name of a "good story".

I completely agree with you. That's a joke. Avery is just so full of it. Why would he care so much anyways? That's just a part of hockey, if he's too wuss to deal with that, he should just quit. That will make pretty much everyone happy. The guy is always seeking for attention and controversy. He whines about something calling him f** but what about the times when he insulted other players and used racist words. For everything he has done, he deserves it. hat he goes on people and talk thrash about them and he expect people to respect him, what a bull...

I think they are blowing this out of proportion but then again I'm not the type to be so sensitive about words in general...I bet hes not the only one to say that word. Of course Simmonds should be careful with what he says but I don't think he needs to apologize to GLAAD and every gay person because of what happened on the ice.

Agreed, like anyone's slate is so clean to cast a stone on this one. People say stuff they shouldn't all the time...
I think it has more to do with the black hockey player and the media's love affair with turning to Avery fr hockey drama than it has to do with what was said.

I think it's ironic how Bush haters (no pun intended) think he had a terrible influence upon America when in fact it was his old man who wanted to make this a kinder, gentler nation who put the first torpedo into our side.
I never once considered it until yesterday, that I very well could live long enough to see the day when our country falls on its face. Never thought it was gonna be seen by these eyes.

Not outrageous at all. It's one of those things that doesn't belong in hockey. It's not different than racism. You say that because you've played for years and this has always happened that's a reason for it to continue? So because 60 years ago everyone was a racist does that mean we still should be today?

It's totally outrageous.
1) What if Avery was acting like a ******?
2) ****** isn't a racial slur.
3) Isn't it only considered offensive if you call a gay person ******?
4) Avery is a little ***** for going to the reporters after the game and telling them.
5) GLAAD is a ******* joke, don't these ppl have better things to do then make a stink about what two, straight hockey players said to eachother during an argument?
faggety fag fag ****** faggerty faghat .. wats the big deal.

Just a little
Source(s): But homophobia is a problem and so is racism. And if you can tolerate one exteme but not the other then thats a little outragous too
